How to Read a Sewer Camera Inspection Report Before Approving Repairs

A useful sewer camera report tells you what was inspected, what was visible, and what could not be assessed. It should also make clear which observations support a repair recommendation. A defect name or a short clip alone does not establish the right method, price, or amount of pipe to replace.

Start with the inspection’s coverage, then work through the findings. That order helps you avoid treating a partial view as an assessment of the entire line.

Check which pipe was inspected

Confirm the property address, inspection date, access point, and direction of travel. Ask where the camera stopped and how the provider identified that endpoint.

The distance shown on a recording needs context. Ask what it was measured from and whether the suspected defect was also located from the surface. A counter reading is not a complete excavation plan.

If the inspection did not reach the intended endpoint, the report should say so. The unviewed section remains an open question, even if the visible section looks clear.

Separate the observation from the conclusion

Ask the person explaining the report to show the relevant footage and describe the finding in everyday language. Common terms can help organize the conversation, but they should not replace it.

NASSCO’s assessment overview explains the role of documented condition assessment and inspection information. For your property, request the actual evidence and limitations rather than assuming every inspection uses the same reporting system.

Does standing water prove the pipe has a belly?

Not by itself. Water visible in a recording needs an explanation in context. Ask what supports the diagnosis, how much pipe is affected, and whether flow conditions or an obstruction limited the view.

The practical question is not simply whether water appears on screen. It is whether the provider has enough evidence to explain the cause and recommend work that addresses it.

Match the repair proposal to the finding

A recommendation should identify the affected section and the reason for its proposed length. If the footage shows a localized issue but the quote covers a longer route, ask why that wider scope is necessary.

For a replacement recommendation, ask whether the provider could inspect the remaining pipe and what evidence supports removing it. For any proposed method, ask what condition it is intended to correct and what it would leave unchanged.

Use the North Highlands sewer repair overview to compare the role of cleaning, inspection, repair, and replacement without choosing a method from a label alone.

What if the report is too vague to use?

Ask for a written clarification identifying the finding, its location, the supporting footage, and the next recommended step. If a section was not inspected, request that limitation in writing too.

When arranging a sewer camera inspection, confirm in advance whether you will receive the recording and findings. Keep those files with the invoice so another provider can understand what has already been assessed.

For a property purchase, also read the pre-purchase sewer inspection checklist before assuming that a recording meets the agreed inspection scope.

Have findings that need a repair assessment?

Call with the North Highlands address, the report, and the section that concerns you. Explain whether the line is currently usable or actively backing up.
